You are quite correct about the totally battery-free operation of an
ME-S in the B position.

Besides the use of the ME-S with a telescope, the M 50/1.4 does very
well for wide-field astrophotos - at f/1.4 when you really need the
speed, or stopped down to f/2 for clean star images.

(I don't know about the relative viewfinder brightnesses - sorry,
but someone else can jump in with knowledge of that.)
