Igor: Godfrey has given some great advice, so I'll only add the following:
1) When you get the "Low Ink" warning, you still can print quite a few
prints, but if you have an important print job that you need to do, stock up
on whatever is low, so you have back-ups ready.
2) I seem to go through ink, but I'm new to this & I'm an inefficient
print-maker; still, you'll get a good many prints out of your ink carts.
3) Be sure to do the following when using ICC paper specific profiles: For
the R2880 using a PC: Properties: Mode: Click Custom & choose OFF(No Color
Adjustment)
4) Read the PDF file below for Color Management if you haven't already. It
really helps. Promise :-).
http://files.support.epson.com/pdf/r2880_/r2880_mc.pdf
5) I use the Pro Huey calibrator; I know it's not a Spyder or One Eye, but
it's what I use & I've been getting good monitor/print matches. I have an
HP pavilion flat panel monitor.
HTH. If I think of more stuff, I'll post. Cheers, Christine

Subject: First prints Was: where to buy paper? (my R2880 has arrived!)
Thanks a lot for everybody's input! It's all very helpful.
I've got my first few prints last night using the paper I got from the
local Circu($)City.
Unfortunately, neither of the local shops (CC,BestBuy, OfficeDepot)
had any interesting matte paper, so I did a few prints on the small 4x6
Epson Ultra Premium Glossy Photo Paper, - to test it out, while waiting
for the mail-order papers.
First impressions:
1. I recalled why I prefer matte finish.
2. Nevertheless, - the overall quality is very good.
3. The prints were coming a bit darker than what I was expecting them to
be. I cannot blame just the calibration of my CRT monitor, as I am
looking at the hystogram, - and it looks very reasonable.
Making the photos brighter would start blowing off the highlights.
(I am printing from LR.)
I didn't find profile for the _Ultra_... - only for "Premium Glossy
Photo", - so I am not sure if that what does the trick.
(Any suggestions?)
I was using "relative" intent in LR.
What would "perceptual" option would do differently?
4. It might be the calibration of my monitor, but yellow and
light-brown colors were somewhat shifted towards red, becoming more
brown. (What I would call more of a typical Kodak film tone).
And now, - one more important question:
--- How much do the cartridges typically last?
(some typical numbers for the number of certain size photos) -
I am trying to estimate when (and how many) I should buy them.
Do any of them get used more than the others while printing various
color photos?
Thanks again!
Igor
