As the "normal" lens focal lenght is the diagnal of the film, (now sensor), 
~43mm is the true "normal" on 35mm film cameras.  Now I used to like ~55-58mm 
lenses as "normal" on 35mm, but got used to 50mm as "normal" and really liked 
the 43mm limited on Film but not as a "normal" lens. The 43mm is pretty close 
to the "normal" I like, (~58mm on 35mm film), when used on APS C.  The 40mm is 
closer still to that "normal", but is a bit slow for a "normal" lens in my 
opinion.  

I think it's easier to communicate using crop factors...
