G1 v L1, G1 with Nikkor 180 and 1.4x converter
Just had these out on the table and figured people might like to see
what they look like:

Bet you don't carry it by the wrist strap with the Nikkor lens on!
LOL ... Yes, the Nikkor 180 + EC14 together weigh four times what the
G1 + 25mm lens and adapter together weigh. ;-)
In use, it's an almost unworkable pairing. The 180 alone is a very
narrow angle of view, fairly heavy lens assembly and has no tripod
mounting to support it. It's too heavy to hang on the G1's tripod
mount alone. To use it sensibly, I need a tripod mounting bracket to
support it ... and then the Olympus 50-200/2.8-3.5 is only a stop
slower, has an excellent tripod mount, and produces better results.
Fit the Nikkor to the EC14 and it exacerbates the problem. I only put
them together for the fun of it.
The Oly 50-200 performs so much better than the Nikkor, in almost all
ways other then wide open @ 180-200mm FL setting, I think I'm putting
the Nikkor 180 up for sale. (The Oly 50-200 vignettes a bit wide open
in that range; stop down one stop and it's near perfect.)
The first comparison is interesting because of the scale the lens
gives to
the camera. I saw a G1 for the first time at the weekend, but didn't
play
with it. I shall have to have a play soon.
I thought you might like that.
