Similar thing happened to my old FA 28-105. Sent it in to Pentax with
my K100 body for a warranty repair (on the camera - paint chips on the
screen) and they 'accidentally' repaired the lens for free. No
questions. You might find that they do the same with the 16-50 if you
send the body in at the same time. Is either in warranty?

Darn it all, that really bums me out.
Back into the Pentax service department again. Nuts!
On the bright side: I found (before I dropped it) that it focuses
flawlessly at all focal lengths with my friend's K20D. So...
someday when I upgrade I'll have a lens which I can just leave on AF
even when at 16mm. Or I can live without my K10D for a month by
sending them both in for calibration (shudder). Don't think I can
live that long without a camera in my hands.
