Similar thing happened to my old FA 28-105. Sent it in to Pentax
with my K100 body for a warranty repair (on the camera - paint
chips on the screen) and they 'accidentally' repaired the lens for
free. No questions. You might find that they do the same with the
16-50 if you send the body in at the same time. Is either in
warranty?
Lens is under warranty until April. K10D is way old, as Virgil in
Oklahoma will attest to (I bought it used from him back in March of
2008)!
But I don't know that I could stand to be without my whole camera
kit for a month.... maybe when my Dad's back in town from Texas he'd
let me cart around his DL for a month to keep me from suffering
withdrawal symptoms!

Don't forget, if that K10D has ben to Pentax within the past 364 days,
it's in warranty. All repairs are warrantied for a year, and because
they do a complete and thorough CLA on every camera that they repair,
the entire camera is covered. Unless you crush it in your trash
compactor.
