I met Donald Healey several times when I worked in New York. I don't
know if he maintained a residence in Manhattan, but he showed up more
than once at the meetings of two groups to which i belonged: The
Madison Avenue Chowder Eating and Sports Car Driving Society (commonly
known as "Chowder" to New York auto wags) and the International Motor
Press Association. Donald held court during cocktail hour and had some
great stories to tell. A former European race car driver owned a
restaurant in the city, and I believe he and Donald were friends.
Can't remember the racer's name, but I think his restaurant was called
Champignon.

Very much so. I would say that he was more loved than idolized.

Just before finals week, my last year of college, I bought the roller
64 chassis from a friend. I spent the summer, between looking for
work, restoring the body and moving the driveline from my '68 (the
light blue one) over to the '64. When Donald showed up for the 25th
birthday of the sprite party in Santa Cruz, I was going to get a shot
of him and my car, and someone told me that I should get in the
picture too.
He passed away shortly thereafter, the same year as Enzo Ferrari and
Robert Heinlein.
