DISCLAIMER: Not a Mac user, don't know anything about the Mac OS and processor lineage. But...

I just had a HD problem on a Windows box and thought my data was gone. I even took the drive out and tried to see the data using a USB adapter to another Windows machine. Out of ideas, for the most part, I reinstalled the drive in the old machine and booted with a Knoppix CD (a variant of Linux that runs off a CD). Knoppix was able to see the data and let me rescue it to an external disk.

That said, I did a little research and found that if you can load Bootcamp, Knoppix will run on a Mac if it's an Intel based machine and it will see the file system if it's HFS+. If your machine fits that description maybe it will be of some help in recovering your pix. See this site for more info...

2 out of 10 of the CD's have failed.

How do you know this?

Did you try the CD's in the computer with the dead HD? Do they work in
any other computer?

I've got four computers here and the two bad CD's won't work on any of them. What really gets me is that Apple knew that they had a batch of seagate drives prone to self destruction and didn't warn us. Evidently the arms have a habit of smashing the heads into the platters destroying the data.

Arghhh.

Thanks for the idea paul but I've already tried it.

Luckily after going through the backups I think there's nothing of value lost on the two bad disks. Maybe some photos of me riding around atlanta on my bike but no birthdays or weddings.
