I think you should ask a few questions about the 4400 before you buy
it.  Can you get aftermarket negative carriers?  Can you use Viewscan
without Canon's craptastic drivers?  Will Canon ever get around to
offering Visa or 7 drivers for it?  I'd guess "no" is a safe answer to
all of these, but you'd need to dig a bit to find out for sure.

Take Paul's advice and go with the Epson.  Even with Epson's low end
models you're more likely to encounter "yes" answers to those
questions.

You might also consider that I'm biased.  I've regretted every piece
of consumer grade Canon crap that I've ever bought, including the
8400f and a mini-DV camera.  Both ended up costing as much or more
than the competition's offerings and both did what the box claimed -
as poorly as possible.  (I have no experience with their cameras other
than an AE-1, which was fine.)
