from a technical standpoint, the square format is
the most efficient rectangular format because it
more closely approximates the image formed by the
lens which is a circle.

There are some advantages to a square format, just ask anyone who has
shot 2 
1/4" x 2 1/4" for any extended period.  While I love my 645 dearly for
its 
large negative size, the square format is always framed optimally.  At
1.3 
times the size of a 35mm negative according to the article I guess that 
qualifies as medium format in the digital world.

I would definitely look at it as a candidate to join my arsenal.
