Mine is the older non-HSM model. And I have to say I'm quite impressed with it's sharpness. It's not quite as sharp & contrasty as the Nikkor AF-S 24-70mm f2.8, but it's acceptable. There are 2 things about it I don't like: - Massive 82mm front filter - Non-existent flare control. I have to really pay attention to where the sun & strong light sources are. On Full frame it's a very handy range and is my most used lens. My advise is to try the lens before you buy one. I did & from all reports found a good copy..
