I've had this problem with the L-208 as well.

Some Sekonic meters will allow you to adjust the exposure index to correct for over/under exposure readings.

I know the L408 will allow you to set an "Exposure Index Correction" to +/- 9.9 EV that applies to all measurements taken with the meter until the "correction" is changed.
