The Kindle isn't backlit. In fact, it uses power only to go to the
next page. I haven't tried one, but it sounds like a workable
alternative, and I've heard some good things about it.. Ultimately,
devices like the Kindle -- but much better yet -- will replace paper
books for novels, ordinary non-fiction and textbooks. However, I
suspect there will be specialty books, including photography volumes,
for quite a few years to come.

I still think books may be around for a long time, if not as long
as mankind
lasts. I find it very uncomfortable to read long, long blocks of
text with a
backlit screen/monitor, what have you. I like the light coming down
on the
page not behind it. Much easier on my eyes.
And I don't think I am the only one, that's why I think things like
Kindle
haven't really taken off.
Best selling books still do rather well. Newspapers, that's another
story.
But if they go I'd worry more about not having enough independent
news
sources, more than the paper thing.
