I'm not sure how exactly the Multiplicty series is done, but I think
you could use a tripod and multiple exposure filter(just something
that blocks off part of the frame on the lens) to get a simple version
of the effect.

There was a story in our local press a few weeks ago about a local photographer who does mostly "domestic" scenes. Camera on tripod, multiple shots populated by various family members in, e.g., the kitchen. I didn't pay too much attention to the technical process, but IIRC it had to do with Photoshop layers which is all a mystery to me. But there was some mention also of selective lighting. So maybe underexposing each shot, but with directed flash on the person in each scene?
