'Fairies at the bottom of my garden' has been a well-known phrase
(expressing scornful disbelief) in British English for a very, very long
time. It pre-dates Beatrice Lily by a long time.

ahh... I thought you might have known her bit of a song/ routine she did
... "Ohhh those fairies in the bottom of my garden."..
which is strong in my memory from theatre days....
I probably should have made a different quip... I had thought she
popularized the phrase.... thanks for the details!
