He probably subscribes to "Poles & Vaulting Weekly" or something similar.
Ask for a few copies so you can see what kind of pictures pole vaulters like
looking at, and copy them. 

I imagine there's a section at the back of the magazine where they compare
the lengths of their poles, or complain about the box being too loose or too
narrow, or their poles slipping out at the crucial moment.
