My experience has been that the labs can print the 4X6 cheaper than
you can at home. Largely due to economies of scale. That is the
paper they have in there printers all the time and mostly print that.

If you go any larger, then the home printing starts to become cheaper.

Case in point - walmart can print a 4X6 for about 14 cents. Just try
to price the 4X6 paper to print on and you will be hard pressed to
match. Then add ink - which is deceivingly expensive.

maybe it's 'cause i'm always looking for deals, but i often see deals on 4x6 paper which are pretty good, e.g.

which works out to about 5 cents a sheet, leaving some headroom for ink; it's when you depreciate the printer into the equation, that you realize 4x6 printing can never be cheaper at home -- if you can get 1000 prints from a $100 printer, that's still 10 cents/print before you pay for paper and ink (i won't patronize WalMart, but Walgreens has a deal for 10 cents/print right now)

since the topic is up on the question of used fixer, i think it's also worth considering how unsustainable the "disposable" inkjet printers can be -- i see them in the trash all the time, and along with the low-capacity multi-ink cartridges they seem significant to the waste stream; i recommend using a service or getting a better printer and convincing yourself that you're doing it for quality control
