Home B&W processing is so easy and cheap that I can't see a good reason to pay a lab for it unless time is an issue. I still shoot a fair bit of B&W film and do all my own B&W processing. At $1/roll or less (depending on developer).
I was in the enviable position of being good enough at it to be in demand, and was willing enough to work with photographers on an individual basis that they were able to trust my processing to the point that they felt they were in control of the process without having to do the work themselves.
