Not that I want to get into this whole pet/master relationship, but it seems to me that ~among~ our relationships with pets, we're (at least sometimes) ~in loco parentis~ (in the place of a parent).
Actually, we are what are called "pack leaders" or "pack alphas". In loco parentis gives the animal too much credit. Or not enough.
