Granted, I know that's true. I recently worked at one of them for a short
bit.
But the fact remains that the film machine is a seperate machine from
the printer and could easily be done away with but they don't. So
obviously there's enough of a demand to do it.
But then again, we might be surprised. When I worked there, there was
more film brought in than I thought especially disposable cameras.
I got out of the photo lab (minilab) business about 3 years ago.
We had been seeing annual declines in roll volumes of 30-40% every year from
~2002 onwards when I left. I talked to one of the techs that I worked with
last Sunday. The volumes are down enough now that they are having trouble
keeping the chemistry in control.
About the only film they are doing now comes from single use camera, a niche
that at some point will be replaced by single use digitals.
