Len, Many times the lag is actually caused by autofocus. Most p&s users don't attempt to prefocus. Just at the moment they want to capture, they press the shutter all the way down, causing it to first autofocus and then finally fire. Some p&s cameras have focus lock. Press shutter halfway down, let it focus and then hold it. When the moment arrives press it the rest of the way down. The lag time drops considerably.
