I have the Sigma 70-300 f4.0-5.6 APO and like it very much. I have shot a lot with it at 300mm and haven't noticed any particular softness, but must admit I haven't made any enlargements from the photos taken at that focal length. There have been times (like today) when I have wished that I had that extra stop so I guess it depends on what you are going to be using the lens for which will tell you if you need the extra stop or not. (and $700 is a lot of money!) As for the differences between the APO and the DL, all I know is that the day after I bought the APO version I read a review in either Amateur Photographer or Practical Photography (UK publication) which awarded the DL version more points because of its value for money. I can't remember how the two compared at full stretch though. Maybe someone else read the same review and has a better memory than I.
