I'm happy with my combo of LR  2 and Elements 5. 

For me, LR is okay. I find it a good previewer and  file organizer -- though 
it took me a while to figure out how to use it so it  would reflect exactly 
what I have on disk. Which is what I wanted. And I don't  do that many B&W 
conversions, so I haven't used it much for that. 

In  fact, I am pretty sure I don't know half of its features. I am still 
learning  how to use it effectively. Elements 5 I like because I am totally 
familiar with  it. I also do a fair amount of post processing on shots I show 
on 
list and it is  good for that.

But I suspect, Godfrey, you'd be very productive  regardless of what software 
you used. :-)
