I'd use a small piece of 35mm film as insulator. Being rather rigid it will remain in place while you slide the flash in the cold shoe (the hot ones have eletric conections indeed), instead of sliding out of position or tearing apart. One point - some flashes and shoes have a very tight fit, so even the 35mm strip may be too much.

My old 280t units would perform erratically when the dedicated contacts were shorted, and not at all when all the contacts were shorted. They survived the first shorts, and then I started using film as needed.

Even in the Digital Age, 35mm film remains essential... ;-)

I just picked up a little Opus umbrella swivel mount gadget. It has a hot shoe (I suppose a cold shoe really as it's not wired) on one end of it. Curiously though, it's entirely made of metal and if I attach my 540FGZ to it it will short all of the flash's pins together.

I'd be inclined to insulate it with some electrical tape and possibly some thin plastic just for good measure, but here's my question: am I being unnecessarily paranoid? Is it perfectly safe to short all the flash hotshoe pins together?

Thanks!
