I don't think you want to short any of the pins together, especially the main pair that trigger the flash. I would think a direct short between those two would result in a constant flow of current through the system until something heats up enough to burn out.

There are non-conductive (plastic) adapters available that will fit between the metal hot shoe adapter and the AF540.
