The serious 16-50 fault was an uneven focal plane. Shoot a textured wall at f2.8 and f4. Try to keep the camera parallel to the wall. Do several exposures to lessen the chance of operator error. Check the results to see if the focus is even across the frame. If one side of the frame is in focus and the other side is soft, it's probably a bad copy.
