Well, yes - but any mirror will do as long as your lens is exactly over its reflection, or the light is returning exactly to the flashlight. A laser would be PRECISE - but too risky. Also, this method requires the mirror to be paralel to the surface to be useful - so a not too small mirror may be easier to place flat against some surfaces.

Aha now I get it. A very small mirror would be the most accurate.

If you place a mirror flat against a flat surface, and position said mirror
in the center of the frame and position your lens reflection at the center
of the mirror, you're at the correct alignment to shoot the flat surface.

The moment you see your reflection you're very close to being 90 degrees to
the mirror plane. Placing the mirror in the middle of the frame and then
seeing your image in the middle of the mirror is going very, very close to
exactly 90 degrees to the mirror - and any flat surface against wich the
mirror is paralel.

You may use a strong flaslight, if your mirror is too small or farther away
- you should see the light reflected back to the flashlight the moment it is
90 degrees to the mirror. No laser - you really don't want to look into a
laser.

I need to experiment with this. I can't visualize how a mirror helps
to align the ccd and the wall.

flat mirror with the back to the wall in the center of the frame to make
sure you're properly aligned.
