You're welcome. But I think it's a worthy shot and worth the effort. It may well be that the dynamic range of the scene makes a perfect rendering impossible. But if it was mine and it was a RAW file, I'd go back in — before adjusting exposure and midrange brightness— and dial down the black point until I got detail. Then I'd work on the exposure and midrange brightness. If the result was muddy, I'd increase midrange contrast until it looked good. That being said, you may already have done all of that:-). In any case, I like the subject and composition.

Thanks, Paul. That burned out stump had interested me since seeing it from the highway (at 65mph) a few years back. Getting a sun angle that touched both inner sides resulted in a glancing light on each. Sort of wish I hadn't considered it even a minor curiosity worth a "fun" shot or two and just kept the efforts in the dark. ;)
Seems to have been taken more seriously than I would have guessed.
Thanks for commenting!

I like the idea here, but in both versions the loss of
shadow detail just doesn't work for me.

OK, I've reduced the contrast and, I assume, also
the "harsh" lighting.
