For something like what you are doing, I don't think there would be a lot of harm in asking the subject to pause for a moment to allow you to get a camera angle. Not directing, per se, but making them aware that they might need to adjust to allow you to do your job effectively.
Collaboration between subject and photographer is a beautiful thing.
