That's because with the stock matte screen not being ultimately sharp, and view being a relatively small portion of your field of view, the effective circle of confusion is so huge, the view through the viewfinder has a much greater depth of field than the sensor does. Also note how much smaller your retina is than the sensor, and everyone knows that a smaller sensor/film frame gives you more depth of field. lrc P.S.
