You're right. I had not even thought about that till you mentioned
it. Guess I was too pleased with my focus to notice. Simply
desaturating the background seen to make the ants pop out a bit more.

A definite improvement, the ants really separate from the background.
May I additionally suggest you try a little gaussian blur to the background
to further separate the ants.
