I prefer to think of the problem as "I want my photos to be presented as well as they can be" rather than "as big as they can be". I like lots of surround space, it gives eye relief and lets me see a photo better. Bigger isn't always better, it's an aesthetic decision you have to make. (Similarly, I like hand-holdable sized prints with big borders or mat space surrounding them.)

It's certainly a different aesthetic than the no-bleed, borderless look.

I think I'm going to have to seriously consider switching over to a
square format. ;;)

Are the java script slideshows particularly a problem?

No problems with the slideshows for me.

If you're going to put thumbnails below the frontispiece photo on the main page, center them.
