I think the square crop better emphasizes the symmetry and enhances the
kinda trippy optical effect.
I'd be inclined to increase the contrast, though I'd probably try the
trick of creating a contrasty b&w layer from a clone of the colour
layer, then blend the colour and b&w layers using the Overlay layer mode.
Also, - what is the name of the visual effect (in Photoshop or other
image processing packages) that is similar to this image (running away
lines, converging to the middle)?
I forgot: how is it usually done? Is the peripheral part motion-blurred?

Not sure if this is what you mean, but the Photoshop Radial Blur filter
set to Zoom kinda does this to an image.
