"AVG free 8.5" You can configure it to scan after you have finished using the
machine on an evening and it scans and then turns it off for you. Very
convenient. The free version is somewhat difficult to find on the AVG site.

You will also need something like "Spybot search and destroy" for malware.

If you are working behind a router in a home network you don't really need a
firewall (turn it off in services), unless you want to monitor software that
likes to "phone home".
