I really like the photo, but I had to spend 10 minutes figuring out why.... :-)
First of all it feels like I don't have the right American cultural
references. The recent comments on grain silos, railway networks and
prairie has helped a bit, but it's still just a ramshackle old
building to me.
It's interesting to sort of try to "read" the building, though. The
overall composition or crop seems well chosen. That's one reason. Then
I noticed the bent-up CGI plate at the top and the couple of strewn
planks at the bottom. With the rust on the two metal thingies on the
left it makes a triangle out of the decay-signs. That must be another
reason, a composition within the composition. I'd love to see this one
in the next PDML annual.
