Everybody keeps telling me field of view and focal length are
independent, and I have no reason to doubt this.

So, presumably, the relatively wide field of view is an advantage; lord
knows a willingness to carry fifty pounds of lens, tripod, and the kind
of gimballed head that requires trunnions, tolerate a close focus distance on
the order of 10m, the necessary complexity of adaptors, and a lens that
costs like buying a car ought to have some advantages.
