Domestic Turkeys were re-imported into the Americas bu the pilgrim
fathers, the originals were brought to Europe by the Spanish who
stole them from the Aztecs, the birds got to England and the
Netherlands by way of the Ottoman Empire thus the name, or did you
think it was simply a slur on the Turks?
I know the wild turkey of North America is a magnificent enough beast
that Ben Franklin favored it as the national emblem rather than the
bald eagle.
Old Ben may not have been particularly in favor of the Eagle as a
national symbol, but he was known to write tongue in cheek essays on
occasion, which modern readers take all to seriously. I would tend to
believe that this was one of them.

The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or
drinking; he can ruin himself with gambling. If he does he is certainly a damn
fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a
free man any more than a dog.
