All else being equal, a prime plus TC will never match a prime that is already the correct focal length. For years most of the major Camera companies didnt even sell TCs because of the known quality losses. Most telephotos already have a lens group near the rear of the lens similar to a TC. Adding another TC is pushing your luck... > How much brightness does a 1.4 TC cost you: half a stop? > 1 stop. BTW, The SMC Takumar 300mm F4 is an excellent lens and it does have a tripod ring. They sell for less than $300 now. Probably not as good as a modern design with ED glass when used wide open but stopped down a little to F8 or so the results are great.
