My friend wants a zoom. He doesn't want to mess around with changing lenses. He's not interested in "image quality" beyond snap shots and an occasional 8x10. He's not interested in building a "kit" and carrying around a bunch of lenses, ot trying to decide which to take with him.
However, I'd like him to try a couple of good primes, like the 43mm Ltd, which he may want to use for special occasions. In that case I'd loan him mine. I know he's not going to spend the money required to buy it. He's just not interested in that sort of thing ... yet.
