I learned in selling cameras and electronics that the biggest reason people don't make warranty (and extended warranty/service contract) claims, is that they don't realize they are covered and/or don't have the paperwork proving they are covered.
I'm one of those few people who buys extended warranties and regularly avails myself of enough service to more than justify the cost. Most recently, I've had a $250 VCR and a $500 mini-component hi-fi replaced with brand new, and far superior, models. So much stuff is built like junk today and unfortunately it can't be trusted. My friend double-checked, found his paperwork, and sent the lens in for a free repair under the warranty, saving a bunch of money as well as a lot of time and aggravation looking for another lens.
