The 16 should be wide enough. Depends on how high above the front of the group you will be. And that doesn't even matter, as you'll have someone staking out the angle of view and drawing lines for the crowd when you get up there anyhow. I've had to do this with extended family (250 folks) from an apple tree stump. The people are buying the concept, not the freckles; how many are recognizable in your sample photo anyway.

If I were to do this for posterity (and for money) I'd use my 8x10 Deardorff and my 265 mm lens. Then you'd stand a chance on seeing who's who. Then I'd have to find some place to get it processed and printed. LA or NY probably. Then I'd submit it to Shorpy! http://www.shorpy.com/

Charles,
I think the 16-50mm f2.8 is wide enough, but not to wide at 50mm so
you are fine there.
Folks like the quality of that lens (don't have one), but I'd forget
the A28mm f2.8.
The width is probably just fine, but I've never been happy with the M28/2.8 and
I am suspicious of my A28/2.8 having similar sharpness issues.
If you can borrow a K20D do so, you'll enjoy the extra resolution.
Shoot some frames on the K10 and K20 and do some comparisons for us.
The extra 4 meg are worth the price - think Kodachrome.
Just my 2 cents...

For the past 19 years, I've attended a festival (Twins Days) in Twinsburg,
Ohio every fall.

Every Saturday at 3:00 there is a "group photo" taken from the top of a
cherry-picker. Looks like this:
