Like I said, bleeding edge, I run closed machines usually behind a firewall that keeps everything out with up to date virus software. Most non Trojan attacks are through RPC type services, I turn those off and block all the ports but those that I actually need using firewall. I won't say I'm particularly safe, but Microsoft's support update model actually makes me more vulnerable. The only way my machines are particularly subject to attack would be if someone got physical access to them, (I think I'll be even more paranoid running XP and shut down even more services), anyone who can physically get to a machine can do pretty much anything they want however, I believe in firearms to deter that.

Unfortunately with Windows, once support is dropped you will be

that are the truly valuable portion of MS's support.

Microsoft may drop support, but drivers will be available for some time, I
spent enough time on the bleeding edge with a number of software development
organizations, the trailing edge is much more comfortable. I wouldn't ditch
Win2K if I could still get drivers for it. I don't need help running my
systems, that kind of support is usually worse than useless, I need support
for new hardware. WinXP will have that for a number of years, maybe there
will really be Linux support for what I want by then.

Microsoft will also drop the support for XP soon or they already dropped
the support.

Maybe you need something different.
