I've seen a couple that looked pretty good in the $40 range, but
didn't really try them out.

I'd think that about 1/3 the price of a tripod might come close, you
don't even have the center column. Also it doesn't have to be quite as
solid as a tripod as it's only restraining in one direction and pretty
much all the load is axial.

I've got a head that I can use.

But I said that was what I was hoping for. I won't be too surprised to
have someone say that I  need the gitzfroto 314-159 which runs $80 in
aluminum and $280 in carbon fiber.
