Need? There is no need if it came out of the camera you are putting it
back into. However, many people have multiple cards for multiple
devices. Because of this, the "experts" have recommended for years
that one should develop a habit of always formatting the card rather
than just erasing it. Erasing does the job 99% of the time, but just
like your hard drive or a printer nozzle, occasionally they screw up
and munge data. The first thing computer "experts" tell you to do when
a drive won't read or your OS is misbehaving is to "reformat and re-
install". And by no means ever use your computer or some other device
to erase or format a card that you just plop in your camera. Need? No,
you don't need to do anything except eat and sleep.
But you should format your SD card before you use it. Every time. Just
to be safe! :-)
