I think all cards are supposed to be Fat 16 or 32, depending on the
size of the card. However I believe there are some differences in
detail as to how they are implemented. The internal card reader on my
desktop, which has no problem with cards formated by the *ist-Ds,
(except that it won't read SDHC), will not read SD cards formated by
the K20D no matter

SDHC is a completely different card standard that happens to have the
same physical dimensions as SD. An SD reader won't do SDHC anymore than
it will do CF.

Does the K20D read cards formatted in the reader
I believe that all cameras will reformat cards that they see as unformatted automatically. I say this because I've put brand new cards into the K20D, *ist-D, and Ds and the minute that they are accessed the card has the proper directory structure. The K20 *ist-D and *ist-Ds all upon having brand new cards inserted, created the DCMI and 100Pentx sub directories. If the card wasn't formated it would have done be at that time. I've never had to do an initial format on any SD or CF card. By the way, there are some SD card readers which will read the first two gigabytes of a SDHC card. I'm not going to argue the electronics but the major difference between SD and SDHC from my point of view is that SD cards are formatted Fat16 while SDHC cards are formated Fat32. There may be electronic differences, The reader in my desktop simply chokes trying to read a SDHC card but that could be simply because it's firmwear cannot read Fat32.
what the size. The new Sony SDHC external card reader has no problem with cards from either camera. I lent a friend one of the CF cards I use with the *ist-D, to use in her Canon Digital Rebel (D300), she didn't bother to format it and it created a new directory for the Canon photos, but the internal card reader can't see that directory, the card reader built into the HP printer saw it just fine. It's best to format the card for the camera just in case.

I'd generally expect that there's something peculiar with the internal
card reader from this list of symptoms, rather than with the cameras.

I have a lot more expectation of proper functioning from the cameras
than the usual card reader, internal or external; a lot more money went
into the one in the camera.
