If by buried you mean 'developed and actively marketed in combination
with Nikon and others', that description would be accurate. Kodak was
the primary developer of the DSLR and sold quite a number of different
models in partnership with Nikon, Canon and Sigma between the
introduction of the F3-based DCS 100 in 1991 and the discontinuation
of the Nikon-based SLR/n and Sigma-based SLR/c in 2005.
