Both DNG and PEF files have camera-generated preview files. Lightroom
loads those first, then generates its own and replaces them in the
library. As you edit your images, it regenerates its thumbnails to
suit the edits too. The embedded preview files are only use for the
first "this is what I imported" glance prior to being replaced with
the ones processed by Lightroom.
