I don't have experience with the Pentax, but I have the Tamron 70-300,
and my dad has the Sigma (we both have K10D's). I found the Tamron
pretty poor at 300mm. At the long end, it has bad purple fringing at
all apertures, and a general lack of sharpness. The purple fringing
isn't just "branches against a bright sky"... it also appears at the
boundary of light and dark feathers on a Canada Goose's face, for
example. At shorter focal lengths, especially 70-135mm or so, I'm
quite pleased with it. I'm also happier with the "macro" performance
than I expected to be.

You can browse around my photos at:

But they're all reduced in size, many are cropped, many have had the
purple fringing reduced as best I could, etc. Both of my PDML Photo
Annual images were taken with this lens. (Blasphemy?)

My dad's Sigma seems generally better than my Tamron, and I don't
think he has any real complaints about it. I've heard that the Sigmas
exhibit more lens-to-lens variation; his seems to be a good one.

My new DA*300 is in a whole different league than either of them at
300mm, of course...
