Glad you like the weeds!

About b/w: my problem precisely - not only were the other two taken on
one of our typically overcast days but also Picasa - which I am sure
is one of the three worst tools for the job - really drowned out the
lighter areas despite all my efforts with contrast etc. sliders. I
have yet to find and to learn a good b/w conversion tool that lets me
fine tune tone and contrast. I think there will be no way around
forking out some goosh in the general direction of Adobe in the long
run.
