Bottom line from my corner? This is the PDML. If something like off-topic threads is going to bother you, this probably isn't a good place to hang out. I've been hanging around the PDML since late in 1998. In that time, the focus has shifted back and forth from more gear talk to more technique talk, lots of pictures posted for comment to very few.

But there's always been a strong current, not undercurrent, of off-topic discussions. It's just the sort of "pub" this place has always been. I read what interests me and delete what doesn't. The risk is the same one common to most lists ... subject lines don't necessarily get updated to reflect the meandering contents of the threads, so sometimes you miss good stuff with wholesale deletions.

At least the off-topic stuff now leans more towards get togethers and common interests and less toward flame wars. Several times in the last eleven years, flame wars have nearly destroyed the PDML. IMHO, it's the bottom line of why Pentax stopped sponsoring and hosting the PDML, way back when. I can most emphatically do without that. Plus, it's nice to see the photos from those meetings, and, who knows, maybe a London (or wherever) gathering will be in the works at a time I can actually go (from Atlanta).

All that said, though, for years I've deal with several hundred emails a day, including the PDML, so I've honed my skills at "scan and burn" through the inbox and creating filters.
